What is periodontal desease ?

Periodontal disease is one of the most common infections, although the number of patients with periodontal disease is very high, most do not know they have it.

This does not cause pain until its later stages and even some advanced cases do not cause pain.   If is not treated early can cause bad breath, bleeding  and  gum inflammation and then the loss of teeth.

In fact periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults older than 35 years.

Healthy Gums

Healthy Gums

In healthy gums the probe goes inside the gum 3 mm max. without bleeding. The bone height is equal to the size of the root

Gingivitis

Gingivitis

This is the first stage of periodontal disease where the gum is observed slightly red, swollen and sometimes bleed with tooth brushing. This disease is reversible (if diagnosed early)

Early Periodontitis

Early Periodontitis

If gingivitis is not treated can convert into periodontitis. At this stage begins the destruction of the bone surrounding the teeth and begins the desinsertion of the gum from the tooth forming a space of up to 5 mm. depth (periodontal pocket) where bacteria can accumulate and live inside the gum

Moderate Periodontitis

Moderate Periodontitis

At this stage is observed greater bone destruction (approximately 50% of the height of the root) and the pockets may have a depth of 5 to 6 mm. It could start the tooth mobility due to lack of bone

Advanced Periodontitis

Advanced Periodontitis

Is the most advanced stage of periodontal disease with pockets deeper than 7 mm. and bone destruction, greater than half the length of the root. These teeth require more complex treatments to be retained, and some of them have to be extracted.
